Celebrates 25 Years of Service

Rho Zeta Omega Chapter was chartered by 45 women of the Metro Atlanta area, as a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. on April 30, 1988. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, who was the South Atlantic Regional Director at the time, conducted the chartering ceremony.

It was Mae Carter Danzy who conceived of the idea to have a graduate chapter in the Marietta/Cobb County area. The group was very active in the North Suburban Atlanta community, upholding the ideals of public service that were established by the founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and has continued throughout history.

Today the chapter has grown to almost 150 members, who continue to uphold its mission of building a strong cohesive organization that positively impacts the lives of families and communities. Rho Zeta Omega is a premier provider of community service programs which encourages high scholastic achievement. The impact of these programs is exhibited by the national, regional and local recognition received for exemplary programs in the areas of scholarships, education, health, economics, social justice and civic engagement.

Currently Rho Zeta Omega provides programs and services in the following areas: Emerging Young Leaders at Tapp Middle School (6^th – 8^th grade girls); Health initiatives with a focus on Environmental Stewardship and Asthma prevention for young children and other programs; Global Poverty initiatives; Economic Security initiatives; Social Justice and Human Rights initiatives with a focus on children aging out of foster care and human trafficking; and Internal Leadership for External Service. Other long term programs in the community include; the Kids Club Afterschool Program at Park Street Elementary School, who is also a partner-in-education, along with Lockheed Elementary School. The Golden Citizens program targets senior citizens. The College Prep program is for high school girls attending Cobb County Schools. The Scholarship Program which awards scholarships to deserving young high school seniors, has awarded over $222,000 since 1988. Rho Zeta Omega participates in numerous charitable giving projects each year as they give back to the community.

Rho Zeta Omega will hold a commemorative program to honor its charter members and celebrate its 25^th Anniversary at the Westin Buckhead on April 28^th.

College Prep Club 2013-2014 Applications Available (Postmark Due Date, May 17, 2013)

The PEARL Foundation in conjunction with the Rho Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., (Cobb County) will be sponsoring the College Prep Club for female students in grades 9-12 who attend a Cobb County or Marietta City high school. A variety of informative and interesting seminars will be conducted. These seminars focus on the college admissions process, financial aid, college entrance exams and the college experience. The culmination of the program will be a college trip to visit typically a Historically Black College or University. It is expected that students participating in this group attend the College Prep sessions planned by the sorority, complete at least 15 hours of community service over the summer break, participate in a group community service project during the school year and complete other assigned activities throughout the program year.

Students interested in applying to become a member of the College Prep Club, must complete the application and return it postmarked by Friday, May 17, 2013. Applications received after the postmark date will not be accepted.

Rho Zeta Omega Hosts Financial Literacy Workshop for Teens and Pre-Teens During America Saves Week

Rho Zeta Omega's Economic Security and Social Justice and Human Rights committees hosted a Financial Literacy Workshop for teens and pre-teens during "America Saves Week."

The financial workshop was held at the Carrie Steele Pitts Home in Atlanta, GA for youth aging out of foster care. Participants learned about income, ways to earn money, the value of education, and how to save.

"The Carrie Steele Pitts Home is a private, nonprofit, and nondiscriminatory child caring agency that provides 24-hour, state-approved residency for neglected, abandoned, abused, or orphaned children.
Through the services of caring, informed, and responsible staff, the Home aims to maintain a family environment that fosters the physical, social-emotional, mental, and spiritual development of each child."

"America Saves Week is an annual opportunity for organizations to promote good savings behavior and a chance for individuals to assess their own saving status."

Through its Global Leadership Through Timeless Service (TM) program, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority members are committed to supporting the needs of youth aging out of foster care.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., founded in 1908 as the first African-American Greek-letter sorority, promotes high scholastic and ethical standards. Since 1987, the North Suburban Atlanta Chapter, Rho Zeta Omega, has actively supported the community through various service projects. One of our annual projects includes awarding college scholarships to talented area students. The PEARL Foundation, Inc., in conjunction with Rho Zeta Omega Chapter will award 2013 scholarships based on the following criteria:

Applicant must be an African-American female who resides in Cobb County and attends a Cobb County High School or Marietta High School
Applicant must be in the graduating class of 2013
Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale
Applicant must have demonstrated leadership ability in the school and community
Applicant must have participated in community service projects
Applicant must show financial need
Applicant must be available for an interview with the Scholarship committee

All applications should be mailed to the address included on the application and must be postmarked by Friday, February 15, 2013, no exceptions! In order to be considered for a scholarship, the following items must be included with the application:

Official student transcript in a sealed envelope
Two recommendation forms in sealed envelopes

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Metropolitan Atlanta Chapters to host peace rally and workshop for youth on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Weekend

Members from Cobb, Cherokee, Clayton, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Paulding, Rockdale, joining hearts and forces to raise awareness of crime prevention,

anti-gang strategies and bullying.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA-Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Metropolitan Atlanta Chapters will host a peace rally and workshop for middle school-aged youth during the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday weekend on Saturday, January 19 at the Ivy Community Center located at 3850 Stone Road S.W., Atlanta, GA from 10 AM to 12:30 PM in partnership with The 40 Days of Peace project.

Attendees will benefit from speakers that raise awareness of crime and crime prevention strategies for youth, such as anti-gang and bullying. There will also be a presentation focused on interacting with law enforcement. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend as there will be an interactive Parents’ Town Hall session held concurrently. All attendees are asked to arrive no later than 9:45 AM.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. In partnership with the Service for Peace, a Corporation for National & Community Service intermediary grantee organization selected Atlanta, GA as a Signature Site to launch 40 Days of Peace. The peace rally and workshop for youth is the kickoff event for this program.

The 40 Days of Peace that starts on MLK Day is a commitment to peace through service and kindness that anyone can implement. During this period youth identify, commit to, and engage in positive acts of kindness and service that make a positive difference one act at a time. National and local partners, individuals, families, communities, schools, communities of faith, community organizations, law enforcement and many others will accumulate acts of peace and kindness towards building peaceful and harmonious communities.

Mayor Pat Vaughn Presents Proclamation to Rho Zeta Omega and The PEARL Foundation, Inc.

Mayor Pat Vaughn, Mayor of Powder Springs, Georgia, presented a proclamation to the Rho Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and The PEARL Foundation, Inc. at the October 1, 2012 Powder Springs City Council meeting. The proclamation recognized the Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) program at Tapp Middle School in Powder Springs, Georgia.

The EYL program cultivates and encourages high scholastic achievement for middle school girls (6^th – 8^th grade) through leadership development, educational enrichment, civic engagement, and character building. EYL program participants develop skills and talents with the potential for becoming leaders within their school as well as their local community.

Several of the students and their parents attended the city council meeting, and were recognized by Mayor Vaughn. Also in attendance was Dr. Jeanne Walker, Tapp Middle School principal, along with EYL committee members.

"Mixing with a Message" for Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer Awareness

According to statistics, every nine seconds in the US a woman is assaulted or beaten. Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women – more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. And, it is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.

October is Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Rho Zeta Omega Chapter, in conjunction with The PEARL Foundation, Inc., and the Chi Gamma Gamma Chapter of
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., will host an awareness seminar on these causes, Thursday,
October 18, 6:00 p.m. at the Pizza Bar, 1450 Veterans Memorial Hwy, SE, Mableton, GA 30126.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. through our Social Justice and Human Rights initiative and our Health initiative, is committed to help bring awareness to the crime of domestic violence and to help in the fight to cure breast cancer. Guest speakers, Chyna McGarity with the Purple Casket Campaign and Law Enforcement officials, will speak on the topic of Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority member, Trish Atwater, and representatives from Breast Cancer Awareness Advocacy groups will speak about Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention.

Organizers will be collecting your old cell phones at the event to benefit victims of domestic violence. See you there!

Rho Zeta Omega Collects and Donates School Supplies for Children with Incarcerated Parents

On August 2, 2012, Rho Zeta Omega members will deliver over 1000 school supplies to Foreverfamily, Inc., an agency that supports children with incarcerated parents. Chapter members collected donations over the summer and will present them just in time for the first week of school.

According to its website, Foreverfamily is the nation’s first and only nonprofit organization in Georgia solely dedicated to helping children who, by no fault of their own, have had to struggle with a unique set of challenges due to their parent’s imprisonment. Too often, these include a sense of shame, anxiety and fear, and social stigma, tied to their parent’s imprisonment—all of which can become evident in deep emotional withdrawal or behavioral outbursts. Since its inception in 1987, Foreverfamily (originally known as AIM) has helped to enrich the lives of more than 10,000 children.

This project was organized by Carlicia Porter under Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.'s Social Justice and Human Rights Initiative. Angela Bowers-Ervin serves as the committee chairman.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Social Justice and Human Rights Initiative addresses gender equality issues including: human trafficking and domestic violence, services for children with incarcerated parents, youth aging out of foster care, and children in homeless shelters.

Making a Wish Come True for Wednesday's Child

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Rho Zeta Omega Chapter, in conjunction with The PEARL Foundation, Inc., partnered with Designs by Lydia and The Home Depot Foundation to make a wish come true for Fox 5’s Freddie Mac Foundation’s Wednesday's Child – Maya on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at the young girl’s new home in Stockbridge, GA.

An entire suite, consisting of a bedroom, playroom, and full bath received the makeover. There were hours of preparation prior to the execution to make this a reality. The bedroom was designed and decorated in a princess theme with white princess furniture, a custom-made canopy, a beautiful chandelier, and a charming wall mural painted by Silvia Cannady of Home Depot Store #178 Riverdale. The playroom was designed to be a fun, learning environment with many built-ins and bright colors. The connecting bath complemented the playroom. Walls in the bedroom and playroom were also adorned with some of Maya’s artwork that was placed in lovely frames to add personal touches to the rooms.

Lydia Felix of Designs by Lydia provided the design concept and The Home Depot Foundation provided a $5900 grant for the furnishings. Joanne Davis and her team from the Griffin, GA Home Depot Store and Stephen Frederick and his team from the Greensboro, GA Home Depot Store provided labor to help execute Lydia’s total redesign.

Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Rho Zeta Omega Chapter were humbled and excited to embark on this endeavor in support of one of its Social Justice and Human Rights program initiatives – Foster Care, and more specifically, Youth Aging out of Foster Care. Angela Bowers-Ervin, chairman of the Social Justice and Human Rights Committee, and committee members Barbara Morris and Sharyn Ellison were the inspirations behind the room makeover.

2012 Scholarship Reception: Students Awarded $17,000 in College Scholarships

Rho Zeta Omega Chapter and The PEARL Foundation, Inc. awarded 12 young ladies from Cobb County and Marietta City High Schools with $17,000 in scholarships to the colleges of their choice. These young ladies were honored at our annual scholarship reception on Saturday, May 12 at The Home Depot Support Center.

The recipients were given the opportunity to share where they will be attending college, what they will be majoring in, and any other information they chose to share. Each of the recipients eloquently thanked their parents, the sorority, and the PEARL Foundation for their love, support, and encouragement. Marvin Ellison, Executive Vice President of US Stores, The Home Depot, gave greetings and addressed the scholarship recipients: “As you begin charting this course in your life, remember three things: surround yourselves with good people; have a plan – project who and where you want to be in ten years; and always put God first in your life – have a foundation in something larger than yourself that you can believe in and connect to.”

2012 Metro Atlanta Emerging Young Leaders Summit: "Girls, Let's Run the World!" - June 2, 2012

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in partnership with Breakthrough Atlanta will host the 2012 Metro Atlanta EYL Summit on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the Lovett School. The one-day conference will bring together 300 middle school girls from Atlanta and surrounding areas. This event will afford these young ladies an opportunity to participate in an interactive leadership development

experience that will include community service, workshops, self-improvement sessions, a fashion show, speakers, and an eighth graduation ceremony.

Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) is Alpha Kappa Alpha's signature program designed to impact the lives of girls in grades six through eighth, by providing leadership development, civic engagement, enhanced academic preparation and character building. "Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's International program theme "Global Leadership through Timeless Service" reflects our mission of service and our commitment to helping enhance the lives of others," said Marsha Lewis Brown, South Atlantic Regional Director. "We are especially proud of the far reaching impact our Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) will have on influencing and encouraging young girls. I am especially excited that the chapters of the Metro Atlanta area have come together to host the EYL Summit along with several community partner organizations."

The young leaders will collect and donate 500 pairs of jeans during the EYL Summit, giving the young ladies a hands-on experience with community involvement. Civic engagement is a key component of the Emerging Young Leaders Program. The Metro Atlanta “EYL Jeans for Teens Service Project’ will benefit The Covenant House, a teen crisis center that serves homeless teens, emancipated youth and victims of human trafficking. The center serves up to 2000 youth a year in Georgia.

Breakthrough Atlanta, hosted by the Lovett School, helps students develop the academic skills and study habits to enroll and succeed in college and ultimately in life. Classes are taught by carefully selected high school and college students. Participants also enjoy special activities such as college visits, community service and museum trips. "The partnership between Breakthrough Atlanta and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority means so very much to us and the students being served. This summit speaks to Alpha Kappa Alpha's heartfelt dedication to the students of our city," stated William S. Pebbles, Headmaster of the Lovett School. "We welcome the Emerging Young Leaders to our campus, it will be our privilege to have them here!"

The theme for the summit is "Girls, Let's Run the World!" The conference opens at 9:00 am with presentations and workshops designed to engage and empower youth, ending at 4:00 p.m. The Lovett School is located at 4075 Paces Ferry Road, N.W. Atlanta, GA 30327.

The PEARL Foundation in conjunction with the Rho Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., (Cobb County) will be sponsoring the College Prep Club for female students in grades 9-12 who attend a Cobb County or Marietta City high school. A variety of informative and interesting seminars will be conducted. These seminars focus on the college admissions process, financial aid, college entrance exams and the college experience. The culmination of the program will be a trip to visit a Historically Black College or University. It is expected that students participating in this group attend the College Prep sessions planned by the sorority, complete at least 15 hours of community service over the summer break, participate in a group community service project during the school year and complete other assigned activities throughout the program year.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA (January 20, 2012) – On Saturday, January 28, local chapters of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. ®(AKA) will recognize the Partnership Against Domestic Violence (PADV) with its first annual AKA Metropolitan Atlanta Founders’ Day (MAFD) Community Service Award. Established in 2012, the AKA MAFD Legacy of Service Award, which includes a $1,000 contribution to the recipient, was created to recognize an organization whose mission aligns with the program initiatives of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

“Alpha Kappa Alpha is committed to improving the lives of women and girls,” said Elva Wheeler, Chairman, AKA Metro-Atlanta Founders’ Day 2012. “Domestic violence isn’t just a private issue. It’s an issue that affects families, and therefore, affects communities – all communities. That makes it a human rights issue.”

According to a recent survey released by CNN and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in December 2011, one out of every three women in the United States will be a victim of domestic violence in her lifetime. Statistics are increasing rather than decreasing. According to the CDC, nearly 5.3 million intimate partner victimizations occur each year among U.S. women ages 18 and older. This domestic violence results in nearly 2 million injuries and nearly 1,300 deaths.

“The PADV’s mission aligns with the social justice commitments of Alpha Kappa Alpha,” Wheeler said. “We are honored to have such an organization receive our first AKA Metro-Atlanta Founders’ Day Legacy of Service Award.”

As part of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s 104th celebration of Founders’ Day, the AKA Metro-Atlanta Founders’ Day Legacy of Service Award will be presented to PADV at a public news conference on January 28 at 10:45 am at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in downtown Atlanta. Representatives from the PADV and AKA will be on hand for the presentation. More than 1,000 members of

An Intimate Evening of Jazz and Dance Roarin' 20s Style

The PEARL Foundation, Inc., the philanthropic arm of Rho Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. , held its signature fundraising event, An Intimate Evening of Jazz and Dance on Saturday, November 19 at The Twelve Atlantic Station. Bandeaus, cloche hats, long strands of pearls, fishnet hosiery and feather boas were not only part of the decorations, but also the night’s fashion for guests as the y embraced the Roarin’ 20s theme. Jonathan Kilgore and Friends performed jazz favorites and guests even had the opportunity to kick up their heels for a Charleston dance contest.

Jennifer Turner, President of Rho Zeta Omega and Gloria Nichols, President of The PEARL Foundation, Inc. greeted guests, thanked them for their support, and encouraged them to enjoy the evening of great food and entertainment. The Home Depot, Don Johnson of State Farm Insurance, Wells Fargo Foundation, and Publix received special recognitions during the evening for their patronage over the years.

The annual fundraiser benefits our community outreach programs in Cobb County, enabling The PEARL Foundation, Inc. and Rho Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to continue our community service initiatives. Human Trafficking Seminar a Huge Success

A group of concerned citizens gathered in Zion’s fellowship hall on Thursday, September 15, 2011 to learn about the history of sex trafficking, how to recognize victims, House Bill 200, the authority to intervene, who should be contacted, and what can be done to stop the supply and demand of commercial sexual exploitation of girls in Georgia. Guest speakers included Georgia State Representatives, Stacey Evans, Sam Teasley, and Soror Alisha Thomas Morgan; and Jennifer Swain, State Coordinator of the A Future Not a Past (AFNAP) campaign. Guests were presented with some alarming statistics for Georgia and the nation and they were challenged to a call for action: Now that you know, tell somebody else. Attend a rally. Write to your legislators. Donate to the many safe houses/agencies that are helping these young girls through their traumatic experiences to lead the productive lives intended for them.

Rho Zeta Omega Partners with Harry’s Farmers Market for Another Green and Gorgeous Event

On Thursday, September 29, 2011, Rho Zeta Omega sorors and their guests had the opportunity to tour Harry's Farmers Market in Marietta, GA at Rho Zeta Omega and Harry’s Farmers Market’s Green and Gorgeous Body event. During the tour, sorors were able to attend a variety of workshops, given by employees of Harry's, that focused on healthy living.

The first stop on the tour was "Sustainable Seafood." The manager of the store, Sam, provided information on the quality of fish sold at Harry's. He also encouraged sorors to visit www.bluemarine.org to learn more about ratings for seafood.

Next, sorors learned about organic clothing in the workshop "Sustainable Clothing." Harry's employee, Richera, explained how organic clothing benefits the enviroment and women throughout the world. There are many brands sold in Harry's including Global Girlfriend and Tom's.

Sorors then met with Nic to discuss "Healthy Eating." Nic displayed several books and videos that shoppers can purchase to help them begin a healthy diet. One of Harry's signature programs, Health Starts Here, encourages shoppers to choose products that are low in sodium and high in nutrients.

In the Produce Deparment, Drea explained the difference between conventionally vs. organically grown fruits and vegetables.

Finally, sorors learned about the Five Step Animal Welfare Rating System, which requires no hormones, antibiotics, or steroids be given to animals. Mike, in the Meat Department, explained the importance of eating animals that have not been mistreated, caged, or fed harmful products.

Rho Zeta Omega's Social Justice and Human Rights Committee is continuing its support of Georgia’s A Future. Not a Past (AFNAP) campaign to stop the prostitution of young girls. This campaign addresses this local and national issue through a four-tiered strategy: research, prevention, intervention, and education. Rho Zeta Omega is hosting a Human Trafficking Awareness Seminar to educate the Cobb community of these cruel acts against Georgia’s young girls in hopes of inspiring the community to get involved in this fight. The seminar will be held Thursday, September 15, 2011, 6:30 P.M. at Zion Baptist Church, 165 Lemon Street in Marietta. Guest speakers, Jennifer Swain, State Coordinator of AFNAP, Georgia House of Representatives Stacey Evans, Alisha Morgan, and Sam Teasley will discuss the history of sex trafficking, how to recognize victims, the Senate Bills, the authority to intervene, and who should be contacted. A former victim of human trafficking will also be among our guest speakers. Earlier this year, Rho Zeta Omega conducted a toiletry drive and donated over 2,825 toiletries and 15 beautiful, handmade pillowcases for girls at the Wellspring for Girls, an agency that assists girls who are victims of human trafficking. College Scholarships Awarded to 11 Seniors from Cobb County and Marietta High Schools

The PEARL Foundation, Inc., in conjunction with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Rho Zeta Omega Chapter, has awarded $15,000 in scholarships to seniors from Cobb County and Marietta City high schools. The 2011 scholarship recipients were recognized during a Scholarship Reception on May 14, 2011. The scholarship recipients’ families and members of the Cobb County School Board, PEARL Foundation and Sorority joined in the celebration.

The scholarship recipients include: Brianna Little (Founders’ Scholarship), Brianna Moses and Amber Wimberly of South Cobb; DeMicha Luster, Nadia Ogene and Christina Smith of Sprayberry; Elizabeth Cleaves and T’Keyah Dukes of Marietta; Jamiya Brinson of Pebblebrook; Mariah Nuckles of Osborne; and Gabrielle Sims of Hillgrove.

Since 1988, more than $183,000 has been awarded to local students. In keeping with the Sorority’s ideals of high scholastic achievement, the scholarship program is designed to support and encourage students to pursue a college education.

May is National Foster Care Month

Each May, National Foster Care Month provides an opportunity to shine a light on the experiences of the more than 400,000 children and youth in the foster care system. The campaign raises awareness about the urgent needs of these young people and encourages citizens from every walk of life to get involved – as foster or adoptive parents, volunteers, mentors, employers or in other ways.

Every year, approximately 30,000 young people leave the foster care system without lifelong families – most at age 18. On their own, these young adults must navigate a weakened economy offering fewer jobs and less support for vital services such as housing. They need – and deserve – caring adults who love and support them.

The Rho Zeta Omega Social Justice and Human Rights Committee has answered the call to service by supporting Youth Aging Out of Foster Care in the months of April and May. In April, the committee hosted a “Successful Living” workshop series which consisted of two life skills workshops. The first was held April 16th and entitled, “Successful Living on Your Own.” The workshop covered the topics of “money management” and “staying on the right side of the law.” The second workshop was held on April 30th and entitled “Finding and Maintaining Employment.” This workshop covered the topics of the job search, resume writing, interviewing skills, and the importance of networking. There were 27 youth in attendance.

On April 23rd, Rho Zeta Omega helped to sponsor our “Pearl of the Prom.” Rho Zeta Omega Members graciously donated the prom essentials for a young lady transitioning from the foster care system into independent living. Chapter Members donated 8 dresses, (from which she could choose), a gift card for shoes, monetary donations for hair, make-up, manicure, pedicure and prom accessories. The young lady was overjoyed with the support of Alpha Kappa Alpha members and described her prom day as “excellent!”

Finally, Rho Zeta Omega and participants in the Youth Aging out of Foster Care program were selected by the Atlanta Braves “Be Our Guest Program” to be treated to an evening of Major League Baseball on May 28th in support of National Foster Care Month.

The Social Justice and Human Rights committee facilitated the final "Successful Living" Workshop for Youth Aging out of Foster Care on April 30. The topic was "Finding and Maintaining Employment" included interviewing techniques, role playing and valuable information on the job hunting cycle.

The second half of the day was a lunch discussion entitled "Life After Foster Care" with guest speaker Donnie Olajuwon. Mr. Olajuwon shared his personal experiences about life in the foster care system and his road to success. He was a great motivational speaker and well received by the youth.

The Social Justice and Human Rights Committee in support of National Foster Care Month, will regroup with the youth on May 28th and attend the Atlanta Braves vs Cinncinati Reds baseball game at Turner Field. The tickets were donated to the PEARL Foundation for the Youth Aging Out of Foster Care as a part of the Atlanta Braves "Be our Guest" program.

The next activity will focus on the support of "Children of Incarcerated Parents." Rho Zeta Omega has fun activities planned for the children in May.

2011-2012 College Prep Club Applications Available - Due April 22, 2011 (Postmarked)

The PEARL Foundation in conjunction with the Rho Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., (Cobb County) will be sponsoring the College Prep Club for female students in grades 9-12 who attend a Cobb County or Marietta City high school. A variety of informative and interesting seminars will be conducted. These seminars focus on the college admissions process, financial aid, college entrance exams and the college experience. The culmination of the program will be a trip to visit a Historically Black College or University. It is expected that students participating in this group attend the College Prep sessions planned by the sorority, complete at least 15 hours of community service over the summer break, participate in a group community service project during the school year and complete other assigned activities throughout the program year.

Students interested in applying to become a member of the College Prep Club, must complete the application and return it postmarked by Friday, April 22, 2011. Applications received after the postmark date will not be accepted.

College Prep: Career Choices and an Exclusive Presentation by noted author Susan Fales-Hill

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Rho Zeta Omega Chapter presented a professional speaker forum on Career Choices during their College Prep Club session on March 13, 2011. Professionals from traditional and non-traditional industries shared experiences on making informed decisions about selecting career paths. Young high school mentees, joined by their parents, received advice on how to decide on a college major, why professions are chosen; how to gain valuable internship experience in a related field; and more. Guest speakers included Rho Zeta Omega professionals: Jasmine Gore, Deirdre Hewitt, Katrina Knight, Angel Riley, and Estonna Wells-Jarrett covering medical, allied health, legal, environmental, and engineering careers. A girl-talk, open discussion was led by former College Prep member, Rho Zeta Omega scholarship recipient and current student at The University of Alabama, Antonia McManus. A highlight of the exclusive event was participation by award-winning author, television writer and producer Susan Fales-Hill, who discussed her experiences following the non-traditional career path, and shared individual communication exchange with different Club members during her personalized, post-event book signing.

Susan is the author of the critically acclaimed memoir Always Wear Joy, and her captivating new page turner, One Flight Up. She is a contributing editor for Essence magazine and her work has appeared in Vogue, Town & Country, and Travel & Leisure. Her range of work has included familiar shows such as The Cosby Show, A Different World, Linc’s, and Suddenly Susan.

Rho Zeta Omega Donates Toiletry Items

We often take our blessings for granted and do not realize how difficult life can be for a young girl without the essential items to maintain proper hygiene and grooming. Rho Zeta Omega's Social Justice and Human Rights Committee identified an opportunity to fill a void. The members of the chapter collected and donated over 2,825 toiletry items to Wellspring for Girls, an agency that supports young girls victimized by human trafficking.

This project was organized by Rho Zeta Omega members Christy Jackson and Kwanza Atkinson, supported by the leadership of Angela Bowers-Ervin, Chairman of the Social Justice and Human rights Committee. Chapter member Priscilla Thornton, Vice Principal of Harrison High School, and the Harrison High Spanish Club joined the cause and made a huge toiletry donation. Members of the chapter delivered the toiletry items to the Wellspring Treasures retail location. Additionally, Rho Zeta Omega member Brenda Jordan, donated 15 beautiful handmade pillowcases to the girls.

Jamie Clements, Assistant Store Manager of Wellsprings Treasures described how much the toiletry donation and the pillowcases will mean to the girls and expressed his sincere gratitude for the generosity of Rho Zeta Omega. He provided a tour of the store and explained that they accept donations of gently used clothing, accessories, and household items, which they resell to the public. The proceeds of the sales benefit Wellspring for Girls. Jennifer Swain, the statewide coordinator for Georgia's effort to combat human trafficking was also present for the donation. She thanked the representatives of Rho Zeta Omega for supporting the girls as they move forward on the journey towards recovery. Did you know that every 9.5 minutes someone in the US is infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS? More than 1 million people in the US are living with HIV. Of that number, 1 out of 5 people don’t even know they are infected. Over 1 million people in the US have been diagnosed with AIDS. These are just a few of the alarming facts about the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Rho Zeta Omega and The Home Depot Present "Green and Gorgeous Garden"

In partnership with The Home Depot, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, Rho Zeta Omega Chapter will host a seminar titled “Green and Gorgeous Garden: Learning to use your Green Thumb naturally." The seminar will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 6:30 PM at the Vinings Home Depot located at 2450 Cumberland Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30329.

Guests will learn how to best develop gardening skills, including how to grow plants and vegetables, and how to practice environmental sustainability and responsibility using eco-friendly methodologies. Activities will include instructional learning and interactive demos. A personal shopper will also be ready assist guests with shopping needs.Prizes, giveaways, and refreshments will be provided.
